What Is Acne?

Unfortunately millions of people around the world suffer from some form of acne. Although there is no “cure” for acne, medications, treatments and at home products have come a long way in the treatment of this condition.

Acne is defined as- An inflammatory disease of the skin in which the sebaceous glands become clogged and infected, often causing the formation of pimples, especially on the face.
Hormonal changes play a key role in acne production for all ages. Puberty, menstrual cycle, perimenopause and menopause and of course stress all cause hormonal changes in the body which can lead to a higher potential for breakouts.

You will need to fight acne on two fronts.

Keeping hormones levels balanced will greatly diminish the amount of breakouts you experience. Birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy and some good old fashion relaxation will all help to keep acne under control. There are times when medication is also necessary. If the acne is bad enough a good antibiotic will also help. Worse case scenario Acutane is also very effective. Acutane has very serious side effects and should be monitored by a doctor very closely.

You will also have to fight acne topically. There are thousands of products available to help. Doctor prescribed medications can be highly effective. Some very effective at home products are: salicylic acid (cannot use if your allergic to aspirin), benzoyl peroxide, topical vitamin A, lactic acid, kojic acid, glycolic acid, sulfur and tea tree oil. These are just some of the ingredients that are helpful in the fight against acne. You should seek a medical professional or licensed esthetician to find out which products would be best suited for your skin.
